HEALTHCARE
The 200-bed hospital with added specialist clinic annex is located within an up-and-coming retail, upper middle class residential and business area in West Surabaya. In addition to the hospital facilities, the building also includes a major retail component due to its siting at the end of the retail corridor. It was clear that two separate drop-offs were needed to cater for the retail and hospital A&E.
Located along the North-South axis, the building is kept passively cool by orientating the short sides to face the hot morning and afternoon sun. Vertical screens with creeper plants form a green pattern along the long façade providing all patients in their wards with some form of greenery despite the concrete urban environment.
